Orange rolls cooked in oranges over a fire

Jun 16, 2010 by

Went camping with our friends to Pismo Beach state park over the weekend and had a great time.  We love Pismo Beach and especially love eating at Splash’s Cafe.  They have the best clam chowder in the world.

I love camping and I love eating while camping.  It just all tastes better for some reason.

For breakfast on the last day, we tried out something fun with the kids and created some great orange rolls that we cooked inside of oranges over the fire.  My wife got this recipe from a friend and we through we would try it out, and it turned out great.

You will need:

  • Oranges
  • Pillsbury Grands! Orange Flavor Rolls
  • A Camp fire

Madison was my little helper for this and she did a great job.

Cut the oranges in half.

DISCLAIMER: No children were harmed in the making of these orange rolls.  Yes kids can use knives safely when supervised by adults.

IMG_9984

scoop out the insides

DISCLAIMER #2: All of the orange bits we scooped out were eaten and not wasted.

IMG_9992

Grab the Pillsbury Grands! Orange Flavor Rolls and put one in each orange half.

IMG_9993

Put the oranges onto a baking sheet or something you can throw on top a fire

Looking good

IMG_0002

cover the oranges with tinfoil

IMG_0005

throw the tray on the fire

IMG_0007

The rolls will rise as they bake

IMG_0013

these smell amazing as they are cooking over the fire

IMG_0026

Once the rolls have risen pull them off of the fire

IMG_0036

Add the icing to the rolls

IMG_0038

sticky and yummy

IMG_0043

Now you eat them and enjoy the morning campfire.

These were a big hit with all the kids as well as the adults.  We were all clamoring to eat these as we sat around the morning campfire.

Try these next time you are camping

Ben…

Thanks for all the comments on this post but WOW some of them are crazy!  Again, all parts of the oranges were eaten and no children cut off their limbs while helping make them.

Always love cooking outdoors, especially on campfires at camp outs! This is a great way to prepare a tasty breakfast treat on the morning campfire!

    Bon appetit!

    Thanks Ryan

and since your name is Cajun Chef Ryan, let me ask you this. I'm looking
for a good jambalaya recipe for a dutch oven to make next week camping. Do
    you have one?

    Ben

  • Anorthernhiker

I think you mean Aluminum Foil.

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

    haha yes, i probably did.

  • Alice

Looks like a waste of a bunch of perfectly good oranges (and their nutrients) to me. Why not just put the rolls on the baking sheet like they're normally made and eat the oranges on the side. I guess I'm just not seeing the point in the extra work/waste required in making them this way.

  • nobody

    what a waste of oranges.

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

No oranges were wasted. We ate the entire orange and used the peels for a fun and flavorful way to cook the rolls.

The kids and adults loved them

  • Lindseylyman

MMMM these look amazing! I wish I had a camping trip coming up! I will have to book mark this until next summer. Thanks!

  • Tin Foil user

We always call it tin foil, not aluminium foil.

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

    yum.

  • Caffeinated_aspirin

at first I thought it was a waste of oranges, but i guess if you were to juice them first, then scrape out the insides, everything's fine

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

Yes we age the fruit from the oranges and then cooked in the skin. Use all of the orange!

  • jtre

    What a waste of face.

  • Moonlady1st

  • Whatever

    what a waste of foil

  • acorn64

great idea you could do a lot of variations of this ….take the pieces of orange, bananas a little butter and marmalade and heat them up over the fire this is really good…

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

    Great idea!

I'll have to try that next time

  • Steve

What a waste of char coal

  • Common Sense

Who says you can't eat the oranges. Or make juice with them first?

  • Thescarredangel

Well apart from all the creativity, why is the little girl cutting the oranges, kids and knifes don't go together!!!

  • Cossie

We've been calling it tin foil since I was a kid. I love this idea, were going to do this at cub scout bash for breakfast next year!

  • Triciachilds

that's awesome, and u can make fresh oj to go along with them

  • Boy_Genius

how about my balls? can you cook them on a camp fire with orange peels? you sick fucker..

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

we did, and they were great!

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

why not? an adult can’t supervise and teach a child how to do something safely?

  • Lox

Those look pretty delicious, and that kid is intense. LOL I must say, I still find it pretty sad that people can always find something to comment negatively on, no matter how benign the subject matter. Kids and knives can’t go together? Seriously? You must have been a horribly sheltered child, I feel sorry for you.

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

I know! What is it with people trying to shelter their kids out of everything? I don’t have children, but I have nieces and nephews and friends with kids and we would take their children camping since they were 6 months old. Let them run around. Let them get dirty. Let them get hurt. Its how they learn. Its how they grow. Don’t rob them of these great experiences in life.

  • Vampire

    This is heart breaking =(

  • Sqholds66

tin foil tin foil tin foil tin foil!!

  • Jbandsma

We always did something like this with the girls in our Girl Scout troop, except we used a yellow cake mix to fill the orange shells…in essence using the shells as cupcake forms. And we would make banana boats; pull one piece of banana skin down, scoop out and eat a bit of the banana, fill with mini-marshmallows and chocolate chips, replace the skin, wrap in foil and place in the coals. Heaven.

Oh, and kids can use knives and other implements if they are taught and supervised. Leaving them ignorant of methods to take care of themselves and then expecting them to be gourmet cooks when they turn 21 is not very bright thinking

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

great idea on the bananas! I’ll try that one next camping trip with the kiddos

  • Sicmoi

    Brilliant!

  • Jbandsma

You can do these in the oven. They’ll miss the bit of campfire that goes along with outdoor cooking, but they are still very tasty.

  • Bleedums

Fuck off. Don’t be so fucking critical!!!

  • http://slowmotionpotion.com/dev/ Lean the drink

    Mmmm, very nice

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

    Thanks!

  • Curious

Ok…I think the only thing that I am missing here is… are the cinnamon rolls orange flavored already ooorrr do we have to orange flavor them… and if it is that we have to do so… how do I do this?

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

They are orange flavored already. You just buy them like that.

  • Tabazoid

    Assumptions are not awesome.

  • Tinknwiz

wow…can’t believe all the negative comments. It looks yummy and a fun way to eat juicy fruit and have a sweet treat at the same time. bravo ! Glad everyone enjoyed them!!!

  • KB

Wonder if you could dollop some icing in the bottom of the orange peel, put the dough on top to bake, and then turn them out on a plate for more of a glazed effect?

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

Ooh good idea. I’ll try that next time.

Why does it have to be a waste of an orange? it looks to me like the little girl is putting the orange guts into a bowl….

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

Yes, all parts of the oranges were used.

  • Winterbrandy

I love wasting oranges. This is perfect for me!

  • su

Thanks for this awesome idea! We have both an orange and a lemon tree, sometimes the fruit inside is not so great, sometimes we have soo many we juice them just to use them.  i love this idea, along with the egg one.  Creativity at its best. Thinking even grapefruit bowls would work since the rolls look really big.
Despite the really lame negative comments, i say Good for you!  You have one lucky little girl!

  • http://www.trulysimple.com Ben

You should try loving reading. NO ORANGES WE’RE WASTED!!!

  • Auntiepatch

Genius!  I hope someone ate the oranges though….

  • shad

the oranges can still be eaten
