TSA #15 – Give Up

Feb 27, 2012 by

I should have done this last week as lent has already started, but its not too late.  Your Truly Simple Action this week is to give up something for 40 days.  No, you don’t have to be Catholic to observe lent.  I’m not Catholic but I like the idea of lent.

Voluntarily sacrificing something helps you realize how much you really have to be thankful for.  The history of lent had parishioners fasting for 40 days.  While most people no longer fast, the tradition has turned into giving up something you love.  Usually its something you enjoy or partake of a lot (read: slightly addicted).  This could be coffee, alcohol, sweets etc.

For lent this year I decided to give up sugar.  I’ve never done it before so I thought I would try it.  I didn’t think I ate a large amount of sugar until I started this process.  The first several days were rough as I had major withdrawal headaches, but that has passed and now I find myself not craving it at all.  Unfortunately I work at the second worst place in the world to give up sugar as our kitchens are FILLED with every treat you could imagine from Costco, but so far I’m doing pretty well.  What has really been hard is my cute old neighbors bringing me over fresh baked apple pie and home made eclairs and me having to say thank you and throwing them away.  That was rough, because A, they make really good apple pie and eclairs, and B, I hate throwing food away.

Don’t worry if you already missed the start of lent.  Start today.  Start now.  Pick something that you could use a break from.  Stop drinking soda, or give up alcohol.  Pick something that you need to cut back on and give it up for 40 days.  You will feel good about yourself and will appreciate all of the things you have just that much more.

Is lent 41 days this year because of leap day?
