TSA#35 – Go for a Drive

Jul 16, 2012 by

One of the sad sign of our times is that people drive less.   Some of my favorite memories of growing up were the endless road trips we would take every weekend and the non stop driving back and forth to friends house during the week.  We would always be going somewhere and it was awesome.  We’d drive up to the mountains constantly, we’d drive to the beach, we’d drive to some random lake out in the middle of nowhere Washington.

There are many factors as to why people, and mostly younger kids, don’t drive as much anymore.   Social media has changed how we interact, they are using more public transportation, which is awesome, and also gas prices are sadly very expensive.  I remember often times raiding the ash tray for gas money and putting $2.37 into the tank to get me home.  Sadly, this is just not possible today, and I miss those drives.  I miss driving just to drive.  I miss driving hundreds of miles just to go see a sunset or a meteor shower.  I miss piling a group of friends into a car, turning on some good music, and just driving.

So this week’s Truly Simple Action is for you to go for a drive.   If you can afford the gas (treat yourself), get in the car and take a drive.   Pick a beautiful destination and take a scenic drive.  Don’t be in a rush, its not a race to get there and back.  Make a good road trip playlist and just enjoy the drive.  Take in the views, the curves of the road, the smell of the fresh air.

We had one of my great friend’s kid stay with us over the weekend and we took that opportunity to go for a nice drive.  We’ve been getting some crazy east coast humidity, which is rare for where we live, so we decided to hop in the jeep and head out to the mountains.

We put the Jeep in bad-ass mode by putting the bigger tires on it and taking off the top and doors, and we headed to Julian for the day.

The weather was hot and the air was beautiful as we drove up the mountains.

We found an awesome trail that had some great views.  We even bought some fresh local honey on the side of the road from a little box where you just put in the money and take a jar.

We stopped in Julian for some awesome BBQ lunch and some fresh apple pie.  It was spectacular.

So your Truly Simple Action this week is to go for a drive.  Pack up the car with some snacks, and drinks and load up the family or friends and get on the road.  Drive somewhere nice.  Drive somewhere scenic.  Drive somewhere, just to drive somewhere.   Enjoy the journey.  Enjoy the company.  Enjoy the time spent viewing the beautiful landscape in the area that you live.  Drive to the middle of no where and have a nice picnic or lunch at some little hole-in-the-wall cafe.  Just take a drive.

We had an amazing weekend that I will remember forever.  Go out and create some of those great memories for yourself.
