TSA#50 – Get rid of your junk…and make money

Oct 30, 2012 by

Last year I ran a project called 1 A Week.   It was a simple way for me to think about clearing out the junk I don’t need, use or want.  Each week I would find one thing that I don’t need, use or want and either give it away or sell it on eBay or Craigslist.  It worked great and was a simple way to de-clutter my house.  Since then I haven’t been doing it once a week, but have been putting things into a pile that I wanted to get rid of.

I just cleared out that pile, taking some of it to Goodwill and selling a bunch of random items on eBay.  I just sold 9 items on eBay for around $120 bucks.  Not too shabby.

And several of these items were things that I have been storing in my garage or closet for years and doing nothing with.  Some of the items I was SURE would not sell at all, but thought I would give it a try and they ended up selling for the most money!!  People want your junk!

So this week, take a look around your house and start cleaning out the items you don’t need use or want anymore.  Put them all in a pile and then decide what to do with it.   Donate it to the local Goodwill for a nice tax deduction or sell them on Craigslist or eBay for some nice extra Christmas money.

Either way, your house will have less clutter and you can have a little extra space to breath.

1-A-Week: Week 3 & 4 – Hats and tile

Jan 29, 2012 by

For weeks 3 and 4 of my 1AW project I am donating some old ski hats and giving away some free leftover white ceramic tile.

The tile has been in our house since we moved in 10+ years ago and I dug it out of the garage rafters while cleaning out some stuff the other day.  I don’t need to store it so I’m giving it away on Craigslist so someone can use it on their project.

And we’ve collected way too many winter ski hats over the years and while getting out our ski gear to go skiing the other day I set aside a bunch of hats to donate.

so nice to have the extra room.

1-A-Week: Week 1 & 2 – Beginning again…with shoes

Jan 14, 2012 by

I have not started off well this year with posting my continued 1-A-Week project updates.  With the time constraints of the new job I may not be posting these each week as they are not the most compelling content, but rather a reminder as to what you could get rid of each week and/or hopefully some helpful hints on how to do it.

I still plan on keeping with the program until I run out of stuff to get rid of, and I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

For weeks 1 and 2 of January its all about shoes!  I never get rid of shoes until they fall apart and my wife never gets rid of shoes ever.  This is always a fun topic of discussion between us so I was shocked, SHOCKED I SAY, when she handed me a pair of her shoes to get rid of for her.

So my old pair of shoes will get donated and her’s, while still in great condition, but just don’t fit her, will go up on eBay for some lucky person to own.

TSA #6 – Start off the new year with a clean room

Jan 1, 2012 by

As the new year begins its time to clear out the junk you don’t need and start the new year off right.

I just finished a 52 week project where I got rid of somethingI didn’t need, want, or use anymore.  I got rid of a lot of clothes, a lot of old electronic gadgets, some kitchen items and just a lot of miscellaneous stuff I didn’t need anymore.

My house is now less cluttered and I even made some money doing it.

Start off the new year with a clean space.  Clear out the stuff you don’t need, use, or want anymore and let yourself start off the new year a little more organized.

The 1AW project was so successful for me that I am going to continue it through 2012 and I hope you will join me.

Take sometime this weekend and spend the day cleaning out the house, or garage or just one room.  Haul all that stuff down to the Salvation Army and donate it to someone who could use those things.

Then join me in 2012, where each week we will look around our space and find something that you don’t need, use or want anymore and get rid of it.

1-A-Week: Week 52 – One year complete!

Dec 29, 2011 by

I have now completed 52 weeks of my 1 A Week project where each week I got rid of something I did not need need, want, or use anymore.

This project has been a huge success for me.  My house has less clutter, my life has more space for important things, and my wallet is over $700 richer.

I made exactly $701 over the year of getting rid of stuff each week.  Most of that money was selling my old electronics and miscellaneous stuff on eBay or Craigslist.  34 of those weeks I gave the items away to Goodwill and such.  The remaining 18 weeks, I sold the items on eBay or Craigslist.

For this last week I tore apart my garage looking for the hardware that goes with the truck shell I got rid of last week.  Alas I did not find them, but I did find a lot of misc construction material I am going to donate to Habitat for Humanity’s Restore stores.  If you’ve never been to a Restore store, check them out.  They sell donated and leftover building materials and have some great deals if you are doing some DIY projects.

I am really happy I started this project and I think I will continue this on for next year.  I hope you will join me.  Start the new year off right and make a commitment to de-clutter your life this year.
