Any Day Now…

Any day now…

That’s the latest on the baby front.  Any day now we will have a baby.  Any day now our family will grow 33% and we will have a new little on in our lives.  No longer will it be just my beautiful wife and me.

Any day now, everything will change…and I am so thankful.

We’ve been going through the last minute preparations, packing the bags, making sure we have everything we think we might need for a baby etc.  In going through part of that process we’ve had 5 baby showers of various sizes (my wife wanted zero baby showers), and have received so much from everyone.  We went from having no baby items to having a house full of baby items and it’s a little overwhelming, but its also amazing.

As my wife diligently wrote out wonderful thank you cards to everyone as I set up all the baby gear I was so thankful to everyone who was so gracious with their gifts for our new little boy.  He will be well loved.

While all the cute onesies and baby furniture are wonderful and appreciated I am just very grateful for everything and everyone in my life and its from that gratefulness that springs about an abundance of happiness.

If you are looking for a shortcut to happiness, it can be found via the path of gratitude.  If you are thankful for who and what you have in your life you will find yourself overcome with happiness.  It’s just that simple.

If you think you are lacking in some areas of your life you are focusing on the wrong things.  Look to all that you do have and those shortcomings won’t seem so short, and will soon disappear by the abundance of everything you do have.

Finally, I have to show this off.  12 years ago when we moved into our house our new neighbor Don told us that when we have kids, he would build us a cradle.  12 years later when we told him we were having a baby, I don’t think there was anyone more excited than Don.  He got to work right away and spent a month in his garage making this most amazing and beautiful cradle.  He made every inch of this by hand including the design.

Another quick story.  Not only did our neighbor Don make this cradle, but our other neighbor Ann made the bedding for it.  She knew we liked Calvin and Hobbles and went to look for that material at the store but when she got there forgot what she was looking for and was instead asking for Cheech and Chong material.   She couldn’t find either, so we settled on trucks.  Good times.

I am very thankful for all the great people in my life and that is where my happiness comes from.

Very soon I will have a new little one to be thankful for.

Any day now…

It’s a new year, let’s get going

Jan 1, 2013 by

It’s a new year.  It’s a new opportunity to try again.  It’s time to start fixing what’s wrong and making this life a little better.

Does that sound daunting to you?  It shouldn’t.

This is simple.  Come with me.  This is going to be fun.

Starting TODAY, yes, TODAY, we are going to start fixing  our problems.  Starting today, we are going to fix our world, and its going to be simple and dare I say a little fun even.

Every day we have a choice.  We can go left or right.  We can get up and go for a walk or run or we can sit down and watch the latest reality TV show.  This year we will choose to improve.  This year we will choose to make our lives and the lives of those around us better.   This year we will take simple steps toward that goal each day and will see dramatic results.

Imagine a place where everyone around you took that extra step to make your life just a little bit easier.  Neighbors brought up your trash cans for you when you forgot.  Friends cooked a nice homemade meal for you.  Strangers handed  you coupons for the items you were buying at the grocery store.  Everywhere you went, people were going just slightly out of their way to make the world a better place for all those around them.  Does that sound like some place you’d like to live?

Good, lets go there together.

This is simple.  Here’s how it works.

I have created a list of 52 simple things to make you and the world around you better.  Each week, on Mondays, I will post one simple action that you need to take that week.

I see countless magazines and ads for making yourself look better.  “How to drop 10 pounds before the holidays” or “Top 10 muscle building exercises you can do at home” etc.

I also see countless self help books on how to feel better.  Whether it be on how to escape depression or how to cope with stress, there are thousands of titles available.  And while there are several books on how to be a better person I don’t hear people talking about this as much.  In fact I don’t hear many people talking about this much at all.  I want to talk about it.

I don’t just want to be a better person for the sake of being a better person.  I want to make my life and the life of those around me measurably better.  And I want others to aspire to that goal as well.  I want to live in that place where we look out for one another.  I want to be around people who are trying to make life a little better for everyone they encounter.

Now you may say that I’m a dreamer, but I am not the only one.

It really all comes down to a choice.  Do I want to merely exist in this world and scrape by doing the bare minimum or do I want to suck every drop of life out of every minute and make this world a much better place in doing so?

Join me on this simple adventure.  Choose more than just existing.  Let’s change the world together.

Let’s get started right now.

TSA#49 – Get up and move

Oct 22, 2012 by

They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.

-Andy Warhol,

My wife and I have been riding our bikes more lately.  All part of the latest effort to get stay in shape, and it has been great.  We are starting off slow and we ride the local trail to the beach and back, but it is nice just to get off the couch and out of the house and do something.  And that is the point of this TSA.

Just do something.

If you want something to change in your life or your world it is up to you to change it.  It is up to you to get up and go out and make it happen.   Here are some simple tips to help you get started.

Start off slow

Big things have small beginnings.  In the case of working out or getting in shape, if you are overweight and desperately out of shape, just start walking around the block.  That’s it.  One trip around the block.  Then on the next day or next week as you work up to it, walk around 2 blocks.  Repeat until you are walking up to a mile, then 2 etc.  Start small and stick with it.  Always try to do a little more than is required and you will see results.

Enlist the help of your family and friends

One of the reasons my wife and I are enjoying this new workout schedule is that we are doing it together.  It’s nice to get out with a friend or family member and spend time with them.  Enlist the help of your friends and family to help support you, encourage you, and even participate with you.  If you want to work out more, get a friend to go to the gym with your or go on runs with you.

Set goals and work toward them

Give yourself something to work for.  Having generic or nebulous goals can sometimes defeat the spirit that helps get you out of the house.  Have something specific to work toward.  Whether it be a date, or specific goal, set it up in advance, write it down and work toward it.   Tell your friends and family that are helping you about your goal.  Write it down on a piece of paper and hang it on the wall.  Then also start measuring your progress against that goal.  Chart out that last week you could only walk for 1 mile, but this week you are up to 2 miles.  When you start to see that progress being made and the activity happening it will help you keep going.

The point is to get up and do something.  It almost doesn’t even matter what it is, but do something positive that will improve your life and the life of those around you.  That is all it takes.  Do one thing and see how that small thing can make a big change.   Then keep going.  There are a whole list of ideas to get you started below.

TSA#40 – Start Happy

Aug 20, 2012 by

It is back to school time.  Time to wake the kids up early, get them dressed and fed and out the door to the first day of school.  Now I don’t have any kids, but I know it can be hard to get up and start the day with a good mood.  I imagine the end of summer and the beginning of school is not the happiest time of the year for some teenagers kids.  Heck somedays its just hard to get up for anyone, so here is a way to make your mornings awesome and start the day off happy.

It is time to make a happy playlist.

Make a play list of songs or videos that make you smile.  Only put songs on there that are so awesome that you can’t hep but tap your foot and dance a little as you get your morning started.  Find those favorite songs that will start your day off with a huge dose of happy and put them all together in a playlist and crank it up each morning as you and the others in your house get ready to start the day.

Your playlist will be personal to you and those in your household, but here are some suggestions to get you started.

and if those songs don’t get your day started right, this video surely will

Also this one is phenomenal. I could watch this every day.

Start off happy and see how awesome your day will be.

TSA #24 – How Happy Are You?

Apr 30, 2012 by

I’m a pretty happy guy.  I like to think myself an optimist and try to always be happy in whatever situation I might find myself in.  Overall I think I’m pretty happy, but how do you really know?

How often do you actually think about an analyze how happy you are or what makes you happy? I think like most people you really only think about it when you are at the extremes, either when supremely happy and you get that rare pause where you stop and think how perfect the world is at that very second, or at the other end when you are just having the worst day ever and you wish you could go back to bed because you are miserable.  Everywhere in between you may not think about it much or analyze it ever.

That is where comes in.  This is a great site that will send you text messages or emails over a period of time and have you take a short survey on how happy you are.  It asks you things like where you are, what you are doings, are there pets around, are you inside or outside etc.  It will track all your answers for you and deliver a happiness report back to you that is both fascinating and a great tool to see what makes you happy.

Happiness chart - What I am doing

Here are a couple of charts from my most recent happiness report. The chart on the left shows my level of happiness (ranked by me) when doing the following activities.  I’m happiest when I’m working on my car project, something I don’t do enough of and (predictably) less happy when I’m doing housework or commuting.

Happiness chart - Where I am

The chart on the right shows that I am much happier at a comedy show than at jury duty.  Shocking I know.

This is a great tool.  I would never take the time to write down when I’m slightly more happy or what I’m doing at that time.  This tool aslo tracks your sleep, productivity, level of focus etc.

And yes I know it sounds a little silly to talk about a happiness report, but why not find out what makes you happy.  Why shouldn’t we study this more.  I think we should find out what makes us happy and conversely what makes us less happy and find out how to influence those aspects of our life.

Your Truly Simple Action this week is to checkout and try it out.  It’s free, simple, easy to use and delivers information that you can use to live a happier life.
