Start a New Tradition

Nov 5, 2013 by

Halloween came and went, daylight saving has robbed us of our daylight and the holidays are now upon us.  What the heck happened to October???

The holidays can bring a lot of things with it.  It can bring excitement to see friends and family.  It can signal the end of our well-intentioned diets.  It can be the anticipation of presents from the children or the dread of buying all the presents from the parents.  We all have holiday traditions.  Some we like,  some we hate, but force ourselves to get through.

This year it is time to create a new tradition.   A new simple tradition of helping others.

I started out these Truly Simple Actions each year with helping others and there is no better time than the holidays to start this tradition.

Sadly for many, this time of year can be dreadful.  With an already stretched-tight financial system, many cannot afford the things they need daily, let alone extra presents for their children.

So your Truly Simple Action for this week and new Simple holiday tradition for this year, and hopefully years to come, is to reach it out and lend a hand to those who need a little help.  If you  can afford to adopt a family who is in need then you should.  It’s just that simple.  Spread some holiday cheer this year by helping those less fortunate than yourself.

There is a great charity called Friends and Helpers who run a special Adopt A Family program for the holidays.  100% of the money you donate goes directly to the families in need.  Let me repeat that.  Every single dollar you give, goes straight to the families that need it.  That is huge.

You can adopt a stocking for $25 dollars, or adopt an entire family and really change the lives of some real people who just need a little help this year.

It is important to have some family traditions around the holidays and this year is a great time to start a new one in helping other families out.

Your Truly Simple Action this week is to help out a family that needs a little help this holiday season.

TSA#1 – Help out a Stranger

Jan 1, 2013 by

Welcome to the first of the Truly Simple Actions for a new year.  Here’s how this works.

I have created a list of 52 simple things to make you and the world around you better.  Each week, on Mondays, I will post one simple action that you need to take that week.

Each week + one thing = life better.

Simple huh?  That’s the idea.

TSA #1:  Help out a Stranger

This week’s TSA isn’t about you, but you will most definitely get the benefit from this.  This weeks simple action is to help out a stranger.  This week you must break out of your routine and think of someone else.  You can be creative in how you accomplish this, but know this going in:

The more you do for someone, the better you will feel.

If this sounds scary to you start off small.  Let that car merge in front of you on the freeway.  Let that person who only has a few items check out ahead of you at the store.  It’s these little things that simply make that persons day better.  That feeling travels forward.  Then if that starts being more comfortable, step it up a little.  Pay for someones coffee behind you in the drive through or buy someone a meal that needs it.  Donate to a good cause to help others.

A big part of these simple actions that I propose each week is seeing tangible benefits that are demonstrably real, and this is why I started with this one.  Helping out someone else gives you a HUGE smile on your face and a wonderful feeling inside.  It is such a great feeling that you will want to continue doing nice things for others to keep the feeling going.

It’s a wonderful addiction.

So that’s it.  Right now, get out a sticky note or piece of paper and right down on it: TSA #1:  Help out a Stranger

Put it somewhere you will see it often and get going.  Think about some fun and simple ways you can help others and do it.  If you’ve got some great ideas, please post them in the comments.

Happy new year everyone.  Let’s start off 2013 right and make this year simply awesome.

TSA#52 – Make life a little better

Nov 13, 2012 by

This TSA (Truly Simple Actions) project started one year ago and it is fitting that it ends where it started.

The goal of the this TSA project was simple.   To help make this world a better place and improve our lives, one simple action at a time.

Each week + one thing = life better.

Each week I suggested to you, a simple action you could do that will improve your life and that of those around you.  That was the plan and I hope you took the time to follow through on a few of these, hopefully more.  Some of these have been simple little things for yourself, and as it started some of these are about helping those around you.

52 weeks later, here we are.  I wanted to conclude this project just as it started, by helping out someone who needs it.

As we head into the holiday season there are some around us who are struggling more than we are.  My favorite TSA’s have been the ones where we get to help those around us.  There is no better feeling than helping someone who needs a little help.  So with that, your final TSA of 2011 is to make life a little better for someone around you.

Here are a couple of ways to do that.

The first way to help is to adopt a stocking via Friends and Helpers

Friends and Helpers is an amazing charity that helps women and children who are trying to escape from a horrible situation at home.  These families are escaping domestic abuse and are trying to start over and often times leave their current situations with only the clothing on their backs.  Please consider adopting a family or a stocking to get them the very basics of what they need to survive and maybe even a present for their children to open on Christmas.  100% of any money donated goes to the families.  Please consider helping them today.

The second way to help is the Rolling Jubilee project.

This is a very simple and brilliant idea that has come about in the post Wall Street financial problems that have caused a a great numbers of families to struggle financially.  The Rolling Jubilee  project:

buys debt for pennies on the dollar, but instead of collecting it, abolishes it. Together we can liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will, and collective refusal.

It is so simple and the math is astounding as far as return on investments go.  For example $25 abolishes an estimated $500 worth of debt.  Imagine a family struggling under a mountain of debt from an unplanned visit to the emergency room.  They don’t have the $500 dollars to pay off their debt and they are hounded by harassing phone calls and subjected to high interest rates and additional penalties and fees, but if you could donate $25, you could wipe out that debt, forever.  Now that family, free from that burden, can hopefully donate back to the project themselves and help free others from their debt and keep the cycle going.  Please consider helping change someone’s life forever and donate what you can.

Those are only 2 suggestions for how you can help someone this holiday season.  There are thousands of other worthy charities and other simple ways you can help your friends and neighbors.  Please take a minute right now and write down on a piece of paper either the name of one person or family or charity you can help this holiday season.  Put that piece of paper in your pocket and think about it until you have taken the simple action of helping.

Sometimes we all need a little help now and again.  Take a few minutes this holiday season and help out where you can.  Now to sing you off, here is Mumford and Son’s singing With a Little Help From My Friends live from the Hollywood Bowl last night.  Best. Concert. Ever.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and all of the other TSA’s (links to all of them below).   They have made an impact in my life and I plan on continuing this tradition starting the first week in January and I hope you will join with me again.

I’d love to hear from you if these have made a positive change in your life or if you have a good suggestion for a new TSA.  Let me know in the comments or you can send me an email and let me know how these worked out for you.
